A quick outpatient treatment to remove abnormal cervical cells found on screening
Why is LLETZ performed?
- Treatment of cervical cell changes (CIN) detected after an abnormal smear and colposcopy
- To remove the transformation zone for diagnosis and to prevent progression of abnormal cells
What happens during the procedure?
- Usually done under local anaesthetic in the colposcopy clinic
- A fine heated loop removes a thin layer of tissue from the cervix
- The sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis; bleeding is controlled at the end
Is it uncomfortable?
Most women feel pressure rather than pain. Some notice period‑like cramps. You can usually go home shortly afterwards.
Aftercare and recovery
Expect light bleeding or brown discharge for up to 2–4 weeks. Avoid intercourse, tampons and swimming until the discharge settles. Results are typically available within a few weeks and will be discussed with you.
Benefits
- Removes the area containing abnormal cells in one visit
- Provides a clear diagnosis and reduces the risk of future problems
- Quick recovery and usually no need for hospital admission
