Sacrospinous fixation

Sacrospinous fixation

Sacrospinous fixation is a procedure used to treat vaginal vault prolapse when the top of the vagina drops down, often following a hysterectomy. The surgery helps anchor the vagina back in place using strong pelvic ligaments.

When is it used?

  • Vaginal vault prolapse after previous surgery
  • Sensation of a vaginal bulge or pressure
  • Discomfort or difficulty with daily activities
  • Prolapse not helped by physiotherapy or pessaries

What does the procedure involve?

  • Performed under general or spinal anaesthetic
  • Accessed through the vagina, so no abdominal cuts are needed
  • A strong stitch is placed to attach the top of the vagina to the sacrospinous ligament inside the pelvis

What is the recovery like?

Most women stay one or two nights in hospital. Some soreness or vaginal discharge is normal. Avoid heavy lifting and follow guidance for pelvic rest for a few weeks.

What are the benefits?

  • Provides long-term support for vaginal vault prolapse
  • Avoids abdominal surgery
  • Restores normal vaginal function and comfort
