Posterior repair

Posterior repair is a surgical procedure used to correct a prolapse of the back wall of the vagina (rectocele), where the rectum bulges into the vaginal canal. It helps restore normal anatomy and relieve symptoms such as bowel difficulty or vaginal pressure.

When is it considered?

  • A bulging sensation from the back wall of the vagina
  • Difficulty emptying your bowels fully
  • Vaginal pressure or discomfort
  • Prolapse not responding to pelvic floor exercises or pessary use

What does the procedure involve?

  • Carried out under general or spinal anaesthetic
  • A cut is made in the vaginal wall
  • The rectum is repositioned, and the surrounding tissues are tightened with dissolvable stitches
  • No abdominal incisions are needed

What is the recovery like?

Most women stay in hospital overnight. You may experience mild pain, swelling or discharge. Avoid heavy lifting and straining for 4–6 weeks to support healing.

What are the benefits?

  • Reduces the bulging or pressure sensation
  • Improves bowel function
  • Restores normal vaginal structure
