Mirena Coil for Menstrual Problems

A long-acting treatment for heavy or painful periods

The Mirena coil is a small, hormone-releasing device placed in the womb. It’s often used to manage heavy or painful periods and can also provide reliable contraception for up to eight years.

When is it used?

The Mirena coil may be offered to manage:

  • Heavy or prolonged periods
  • Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea)
  • Endometriosis or adenomyosis symptoms
  • Women needing long-term contraception

What does fitting involve?

  • Usually done in clinic without the need for anaesthetic
  • A speculum is used to gently insert the coil into the womb
  • The process takes only a few minutes
  • Some cramping or spotting may occur afterwards

Is it uncomfortable?

Most women find the fitting tolerable, although some experience mild discomfort. You can take pain relief beforehand to help. Any cramping tends to settle quickly.

What are the benefits?

  • Lightens or stops periods for many women
