Menstrual Irregularities

Understanding changes in your menstrual cycle

Changes in your periods are common and often harmless, but they can sometimes signal an underlying issue. If your cycle becomes irregular, unusually heavy, or absent, it’s worth seeking medical advice.

What counts as irregular?

Menstrual irregularities may include:

  • Bleeding more or less often than usual
  • Very heavy or prolonged periods
  • Bleeding between periods
  • No periods for several months (amenorrhoea)
  • Unexpected bleeding after menopause

What can cause it?

Irregular periods can be linked to:

  • Hormonal changes (e.g. perimenopause, polycystic ovary syndrome)
  • Stress, weight changes or intense exercise
  • Fibroids or polyps
  • Thyroid problems
  • Certain medications

How are they investigated?

Depending on your symptoms, investigations may include:

  • Blood tests to check hormone levels
  • Pelvic ultrasound to look at the womb and ovaries
  • Endometrial biopsy or hysteroscopy if needed

What are the next steps?

Treatment depends on the cause and may include lifestyle advice, hormone treatments or surgical options where necessary.
