Enterocele repair

Enterocele repair

An enterocele is a type of pelvic organ prolapse where a loop of small intestine pushes into the upper part of the vagina. Enterocele repair is a surgical procedure that restores the normal support of the upper vaginal wall and relieves associated symptoms.

When is it considered?

  • A sensation of vaginal heaviness or bulging
  • Lower abdominal or vaginal discomfort
  • Difficulty with bowel movements
  • Symptoms not improved with conservative treatment

What does the procedure involve?

  • Performed under general or spinal anaesthetic
  • Usually carried out through the vagina
  • The small bowel is gently repositioned
  • The supporting tissues are repaired and reinforced using dissolvable stitches

What is the recovery like?

Most women return home after a short hospital stay. Some cramping or discomfort is expected. Avoid heavy lifting and follow post-operative care instructions for several weeks.

What are the benefits?

  • Alleviates the sensation of pressure or bulging
  • Improves bowel function
  • Restores vaginal support
