Endometrial Ablation

A treatment to reduce or stop heavy menstrual bleeding

Endometrial ablation is a simple day-case procedure that removes or destroys the lining of the womb (endometrium) to manage heavy periods. It can significantly reduce menstrual flow or stop periods altogether.

When is it considered?

Endometrial ablation may be suitable if you have:

  • Heavy periods that affect your quality of life
  • Bleeding that hasn’t improved with medication or other treatments
  • No plans for future pregnancy
  • What does the procedure involve?

    • Usually performed under local or general anaesthetic
    • A thin instrument is passed through the cervix into the womb
    • Heat, radiofrequency, or freezing is used to destroy the womb lining
    • No incisions are made

    What is recovery like?

Most women go home the same day. You may have cramping and light bleeding for a few days, but most return to normal activities quickly. It’s important to avoid intercourse and tampon use for a short period while healing.

    What are the benefits?

    • Reduces or stops menstrual bleeding
    • Avoids major surgery
    • Quick recovery
    • Suitable for many women not wanting further children

Endometrial ablation isn’t a form of contraception and isn’t suitable if pregnancy is still planned. If you’re unsure whether this treatment is right for you, we’re here to help guide your decision.
