Anterior Repair

Surgical support for the front wall of the vagina

Anterior repair, also known as anterior colporrhaphy, is a surgical procedure to treat a prolapse of the bladder (cystocele) into the front wall of the vagina. It helps restore the normal position of the bladder and relieve associated symptoms.

When might you need anterior repair?

This procedure is usually offered if you have:

  • A vaginal bulge or pressure sensation
  • Urinary leakage or incomplete bladder emptying
  • Difficulty with vaginal intercourse due to prolapse
  • No improvement with conservative measures like physiotherapy or pessaries

What does the surgery involve?

  • Carried out under general or spinal anaesthetic
  • A cut is made in the vaginal wall
  • The bladder is gently repositioned
  • The surrounding tissues are tightened with dissolvable stitches

What is the recovery like?

Most women stay in hospital overnight. Some discomfort is normal for a few days, and you will be advised to avoid strenuous activity for 4–6 weeks. Full recovery usually takes around six weeks.

What are the benefits?

  • Relieves the feeling of bulging or pressure
  • Improves bladder control
  • Enhances vaginal support and quality of life
